Adult Prom for Purpose Hopes to 'Pack In' Crowd This Saturday for 4H Backpack Program

prom-nightCENTRAL CITY, Ky. (5/15/14) — Whether you attended your high school prom in the 1940s, or just last year, the Adult Prom for a Purpose is a perfect way to relive those fond memories, and to help the Muhlenberg 4-H Food for Kids Backpack Program.

The First Annual Prom with a Purpose Fundraiser will get underway 7 p.m. Saturday, May 17 at the Central City Convention Center.

The 4-H "Foods for Kids Backpack" program has helped thousands of low-income children receive nutritious food for several years. It has been copied by many other 4-H programs across the state due to its huge success in effectively delivering nutritious food to children who would otherwise have little or nothing to eat during weekends and the summer school break.

Although this year's main fundraiser the 4-H Penguin Plunge raised thousands of dollars, the much higher than average jobless rate in Muhlenberg County has added well over a hundred new children this year to the list of those already in need of healthy food items.

The Prom for a Purpose hopes to raise the remaining funds needed to make sure each child in need of food gets a weekend backpack throughout the 2014-2015 school year.

According to Tammy Piper, director of the Central City Convention Center, and one of the organizers of the prom, there will be a prom king and queen court. There will also be entertainment provided by Sean Mooningham, music provided by Wendell Miller's Sights and Sounds and professional photographer Amy Hourigan will be taking prom picture.

Mackenzie Whitaker Pogue, Muhlenberg County 4-H Coordinator, told SurfKY News that tickets sales have been brisk, but some tickets still remain.

"We do still have tickets available at the CCCC, along with the Muhlenberg office for the UK Extension Service, and at Miss Hoss' Sweet Shop in Greenville," Pogue said. "We also have some awesome decoration ideas we think everyone will love. Several local food venders will be on hand including Miss Hoss', Papa John's, Brother's Barbecue and J and H Bakery. The list of supporters just keeps getting longer. We are really happy with the great response by Muhlenberg County for this cause. And like the plunge, it will be a whole lot of fun, too."

The event is semi-formal, with a suit and tie requested for men.

For more details and to purchase advance tickets call the CCCC at (270) 757-1723. Advance ticket prices are $25 per person, $40 per couple. Tickets purchased at the door are $30 per person and $50 per couple.
