Rose Curtain Players New Play to Premiere at World Event

OWENSBORO, KY (3/22/2013) – For Owensboro High School Theatre instructor Caroline Greer, theatre is more than an art. It is a way of life. You can imagine her excitement, then, when she was named “Best Director” among all the participants at the Southeastern Theatre Conference Convention (SETC), which drew more than 500 high school students and drama teachers from all over the southeast.

Owensboro High School’s “The Rose Curtain Players” earned ranking of first runner-up last November at the Kentucky Theatre association One-act Play competition with their performance of Among Friends and Clutter, by Lindsay Price. On March 9, the Rose Curtain Players competed against 16 other schools and took the victory at the SETC competition in Louisville, KY. While the troupe as a whole received a “superior” rating from the three judges, it was juniors Helen Merritt and senior Jonah Clark who “shined,” and they were selected as “All-Star Cast members.” Greer called the two students “fantastic to work with!”

While at the conference, RCP had opportunities to attend various workshops, presentations, and performances. According to a news release from the Owensboro Public School system, four OHS students auditioned for over 100 colleges. Greer said the students had a fair amount of success as a result of the auditions.

“Jonah Clark, Helen Merritt, Will Van Winkle, and Navji Dixon auditioned for over 100 colleges, and received over 140 callbacks between them,” she said, adding this is only Clark’s second year of theatre.

“For him to have accomplished what he has in such a short amount of time is amazing.” Greer said.

Also during the convention, Greer had a chance to present a workshop with David Balthrop, head of the theatre department at Murray State University. She told SurfKY that the main focus of the workshop was to break down the barriers between what is considered high school theatre, and what professional theatre is.

Perhaps the most exciting announcement of the day regarding the Rose Curtain Players, however, was when Greer told the Owensboro Board of Education at its meeting on Thursday that Lindsey Price, who wrote Among Friends and Clutter and The Snow Show is privately coordinating with Greer and Owensboro High School to have the Rose Curtain Player introduce her newest play, Cobweb Dreams, at a world premiere event next April. Cobweb Dreams will be Price’s interpretation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Nights Dream.

The Rose Curtain players will perform their award winning show Among Friends and Clutter Tuesday, March 28, at 7 p.m. Owensboro Middle School will also perform The Snow Show.
