(4/3/13) – With still at least several weeks to go before the completion of the new facility in Owensboro, Owensboro Convention Center General Manager Dean Dennis, Owensboro Mayor Ron Payne, and Owensboro RV owners Richard and Lisa Nehls gathered this morning at the Nehls’ business on West Parrish to announce the first official event at the center in 2014.
 
“The Outdoor Hunting and Fishing Expo,” sponsored by Owensboro RV, will be held Feb. 7 to Feb. 9, and is expected to draw a crowd of more than 5,000 exhibitors and 200 vendors, the organizers said.
 
Dennis said one of the goals when developing the idea for the facility was to attract “opportunities and events that would fill the convention center.”
 
“We found the perfect one to kick it off,” he said of the hunting and fishing expo. “It really fits the market place.”
 
Payne said including the February expo, the convention center is in the process of securing approximately “$1.3 million worth of business,” adding that the timing of the first event – February – was significant for city business.
 
“February is a slow month,” he said. “We’re going to have 5,000-plus people eating in our restaurants and staying in our hotels.”
 
In a news release, Owensboro Convention Center officials stated the cost for entrance into the expo will be $8 per person, and children under 12 may enter for free.
