DCPS Food Service Director to Take Part in National Forum on Nutrition

lisa simsOWENSBORO, Ky. (4/22/13) – Lisa Sims, food services director for the Daviess County Public Schools district, has been invited to participate in a national forum addressing the topic of nutrition standards.

The group, titled “Mission: Readiness – Military Leaders for Kids,” will meet with Rep. Hal Rogers and Congressional staff members to share information about how schools can support a national agenda to improve nutrition, prevent obesity and maintain national security.

Sims was invited to represent the area of school nutrition as part of the conversation addressing concerns about military readiness and national security. According to Mission: Readiness, obesity is the leading medical disqualifier for military service. As part of this forum in Washington, D.C., on April 26, retired military generals and admirals will address the importance of improved nutrition standards, the need for updated competitive food standards, and the importance of physical activity to reduce obesity for all kids, whether or not they choose to enter military service.

In addition to Sims, participants in this briefing will include Congressional sponsor Rep. Mike Coffman (R-CO); Chef Jose Andres of television’s “Iron Chef” fame, who will discuss the importance of food in children’s lives and the learning environment; and Mission: Readiness members Brigadier General (Ret.) Robert Crear of Mississippi and Major General (Ret.) D. Allen Youngman of Kentucky, who will update the committee about efforts within the Department of Defense to promote health among the military population, including the new Healthy Base Initiative.

Sims will describe the recently proposed rule from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for competitive foods and discuss its common-sense approach to creating a healthier school environment. (See below for information about the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010.)

Sims has served DCPS as food service director since 1999. She is a member and past president of the Kentucky School Nutrition Association and was a 2010 recipient of the President’s Leadership Award for Exceptional Accomplishments. She is available for media interviews either before or after this event by calling (270) 852-7000 or by email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
