cindy hudsonOWENSBORO, Ky. (4/24/13) – At a ceremony intentionally included in a school-wide faculty meeting Tuesday afternoon as part of the effort to make it a surprise for the recipient, Daviess County School District administrators and staff joined Kentucky Association of School Administration in presenting Daviess County High School Secretary Cindy Hudson with the Wanda Lutrell Office Professional Award.

During the presentation of the award, Daviess County School District Superintendent Owens Saylor and KASA representatives attending the event offered words of high praise to Hudson regarding her almost 15-year career with the school, before presenting her with a clock and a $500 check.

Immediately following the ceremony, Hudson told reporters she was “shocked” to learn she had won the award.

“It feels great,” she added. “I kept looking around for someone else.”

A copy of the nomination essay form was provided to media. In it, Hudson is described as being “known for her conscientious” and encouraging professionalism.

“There is no duty that Cindy feels is not her responsibility,” the nominees wrote in one of their answers. “Although it is not expected, she will often bring in food to meetings. She has volunteered to make home visits with the youth services coordinator. When teachers are called out on emergencies, she steps in and helps prepare materials. Other duties she assumes that are not listed in her job description include helping with fundraisers, working with the parent-teacher organization, dealing will aspects of organizing prom and out after-prom party designed to keep students safe and entertained. She often provides a place for students with special needs to wait, to calm down, or just to talk. If all the duties Mrs. Hudson performed were listed on a contract, it would be volumes.”

According to a news release regarding the presentation, award criteria for the annual recognition includes selecting a school office professional “who contributes significantly to the efforts of the administrative team, who is the pulse of the office, and exhibits resourcefulness, commitment, professionalism and a positive attitude.” Members of office support staff who are employed in a school, school district, education organization or state agency are eligible for nomination. Candidates are evaluated by a statewide judging panel made up of KASA member representatives.
