LEXINGTON, Ky. (5/13/13) – The Kentucky baseball team will conclude its 2013 home schedule with a midweek matchup against No. 14 Indiana, with first pitch on Tuesday slated for 6:30 p.m. ET at Cliff Hagan Stadium.
The game will be televised live on the UK IMG Network, available on Fox Sports South, CWKYT-TV in Central Kentucky and WYMO-TV in Louisville. The game will also be broadcast live on the UK IMG Radio Network, with the Voice of UK Baseball, Neil Price, calling the action. Fans can hear the game in Central Kentucky on WLAP 630-AM and online at UKathletics.com.
Kentucky (28-22) will send senior lefty Jerad Grundy (6-5, 5.02 ERA) to the mound on Tuesday to face Indiana freshman southpaw Will Coursen-Carr (2-0, 1.30 ERA). Grundy has made 12 starts in 2013, tossing 71.2 innings, walking 18 and striking out 58. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound native of Johnsburg, Ill., is coming off his first career midweek start last Tuesday vs. Wright State. Grundy worked five innings vs. WSU, allowing five hits and one run, striking out five. Coursen-Carr has appeared in 11 games with seven starts, working 34.2 innings, walking 13 and striking out 21. In his last start, Coursen-Carr worked 6.2 innings at No. 10 Louisville last Tuesday, allowing three unearned runs, walking two and striking out six.
The Wildcats have hit .256 as a team in 2013, slugging .364 and reaching base at a .363 clip, belting 33 homers and stealing 52 bases. On the mound, UK has a 3.61 ERA, striking out 350 in 453 innings. Defensively, the Wildcats have fielded .973, turning 55 double plays and allowing only 29-of-48 steals.
UK has been led at the plate by freshman outfielder Kyle Barrett, who owns a .351 mark with four doubles, one triple, 14 RBI and four steals. J.T. Riddle has hit .292 with seven doubles, one triple, one homer and 19 RBI, stealing six bags. A.J. Reed owns a .286 mark with eight doubles, two triples, 12 homers and 49 RBI, while Austin Cousino has hit .257 with 12 doubles, one triple, six homers and 25 RBI, swiping 12 bases. Max Kuhn has hit .246 with eight doubles, one triple, five homers and 29 RBI. Senior Zac Zellers has hit .244 with three homers, 25 RBI and seven steals.
In relief, senior Walter Wijas (2-0, 0.98 ERA) has a staff-best 25 outings, with junior Trevor Gott (4-1, 1.29 ERA) saving 11 games in 28 innings. Righty Chandler Shepherd (4-0, 3.26 ERA) has appeared in 22 games and hurled 47.1 frames, with UK also getting strong collegiate debuts from freshmen Ryne Combs (0-0, 2.01 ERA), Zach Strecker (1-1, 2.35 ERA) and Dylan Dwyer (1-0, 3.86 ERA).
Indiana (38-11) is coming off two wins in a three-game series against Northwestern, also suffering a midweek loss at No. 10 Louisville last Tuesday. The Hoosiers have hit .307 as a team with 40 homers and have stolen 55-of-92 bases. On the mound, IU has a 2.52 ERA in 446 innings, walking 141 and striking out 303. Defensively, IU has fielded .964 with 55 double plays, allowing 45-of-62 steals.
Individually, Indiana has been led at the plate by Dustin DeMuth, who has hit .417 with 16 doubles, one triple, four homers and 34 RBI. Kyle Shwarber has hit .391 with 10 doubles, one triple, 13 homers and 41 RBI. Scott Donley has hit .361 with 13 doubles, four homers and 49 RBI. Chris Sujka has a .321 average with eight RBI, with Will Nolden batting .307 and Michael Basil hitting .304.
In the bullpen, Ryan Halstead (2-3, 2.32 ERA) has appeared in 20 games with nine saves. Scott Effross (6-1, 1.80 ERA) has a team-high 21 relief outings and five saves in 50 innings. Luke Harrison (4-1, 2.34 ERA) has appeared in 17 games, with Brian Korte (0-0, 1.93 ERA) pitching in 12 games.
UK leads the all-time series with Indiana, 18-15, including a 10-8 all-time mark in games played in Lexington. UK has won two of the last three meetings and four of the last five.
In the 2012 meeting in Bloomington, Ind., Kentucky posted a 6-5 win over Indiana in 12 innings. UK plated single runs in the second and third innings, before IU got a three-run frame in the third. UK tied up the game at 4-4 with two runs in the sixth inning, before the two teams traded single runs in the 11th inning. UK plated the go-ahead run in the top of the 12th, before Sam Mahar locked down the game with his first career save in the bottom of the frame. UK started Chandler Shepherd, who worked two innings and allowed three runs – one earned. A.J. Reed tossed 5.1 innings in relief without allowing a walk or earned run. Trevor Gott worked 2.1 innings in relief, allowing one run with three strikeouts. IU started Ryan Halstead, who worked five innings and allowed two runs. Brian Korte suffered the loss, with one run surrendered in 1.2 frames.
