Outdoors with Big Country – Kentucky’s Deer Forecast

deer 300KENTUCKY (9/13/13) – When the Whitetail world has anything talk about, it’s Kentucky that’s in the top headlines!

Respectively talking of trophy deer being taken from Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, Ohio and other states, it’s Kentucky that has made it to the top of the herd being the classic trophy area to hunt. Within the state of Kentucky, there are hundreds of Boone and Crocket Bucks being taken across the state, year after year. Several counties reported over 2,500 total deer being checked in by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife’s telecheck system from last year, with Owen County coming in first place with an amazing 3,751 deer.

Within our area, in the Green River region, Hopkins Country reported 2,074 deer, Webster with 2,018 deer and in the purchase area Crittenden County reported in as the second highest in the state with 3,010 deer reported. Christian County reported 2,705 deer and Graves County reported 2,945 deer. Within all those high numbers, several Purchase region area counties do have limitless Doe Tags available that may have calculated to those higher numbers reported, which is good for deer herd management.

Within all counties in the Western Kentucky areas, some very good ones are Muhlenberg, Ohio, Todd, Logan and Livingston Counties.

The weather forecast for this weekend is calling for a cool front and much more seasonable temperatures moving into the area on Friday. The weekend will be a great time to be in the deer woods.

I always check the moon phase and Dan Barnett’s Feeding Chart in the Kentucky Game and Fish Magazine each month. It gives the best feeding times for Fame for six weeks. It also gives a reference of lunar times.

Good luck to all deer hunters across the state this weekend and be safe!

As always, if you do take a trophy buck or doe and would like to get your photo up on SurfKY News, send us a nice photo with your name, information of county taken, and any other information.
