UK Men’s Golf Finishes Eleventh at Schenkel Invitational

UK Golf 300LEXINGTON, Ky. (3/17/14) — For the first time this season the University of Kentucky men’s golf team finished a tournament outside of the top five with an 11th place finish at the Schenkel Invitational Sunday afternoon at the Forest Heights Country Club.

Kentucky finished the day with an eight-over par, 296.

The Wildcats final team score was 18-over par, 882. Georgia Southern won the team championship with a 14-under par, 850, while No. 14 UAB (-6), No. 6 UCF (-2), No. 10 Virginia (+4) and No. 15 Texas (+4) completed the top five. Georgia Southern’s Scott Wolfes won the individual title with a seven-under par, 209.

Rounding out the rest of the team standings were College of Charleston (+5), Georgia State (+7), Ole Miss (+11), North Florida (+12), North Carolina State (+17), Duke (+22), Florida (+26), North Texas (+34) and Maryland (+40).

“We had a chink in the armor this week, but I still love this team,” said Kentucky head coach Brian Craig. “This will help us in the long run and I look for a big bounce back at the Hootie event next week. Great work also by Stephen Powers and David Snyder for their continued solid play.”

UK collected a pair of top 10 individual places with senior Stephen Powers and junior David Snyder. Powers climbed into a tie for sixth place with a final score of two-under par, 214. Powers recorded his second straight round of under par play with a two-under par, 70. The Naperville, Ill., native ranked second out of all players in Par 5 scoring this weekend with a six-under par. He now has three top 10 finishes this season. Snyder collected an even par, 72, Sunday to finish in a tie for 10th with a one-under par, 215. It marks his second top 10 placing of the season.

Senior Cody Martin tied for 65th with an 11-over par, 227, after shooting a six-over par, 78, in the final round. Junior Will Bishop registered a five-over par, 77, to finish the tournament 12-over par. Bishop tied for 71st.

It was a tough outing this weekend for senior Ben Stow who tied for 77th with a 14-over par, 230. Stow did not record an even par round or better for the first time this season after a five-over par, 77, Sunday.

Playing as an individual, freshman Hager Collins finished the day with a five-over par, 77. Collins finished in 90th place with a 28-over par, 244.
