Armstrong Coal Company Receives Award for Mine Reclamation from Department for Natural Resources

reclammation 300FRANKFORT, Ky. (10/28/13) - The Department for Natural Resources presented a 2013 Award for Excellence in Reclamation to Armstrong Coal Company, Inc. for its outstanding reclamation work on permit No. 892–0114. This facility is a 90.5-acre area mining operation located near the community of McHenry in Ohio County.

Portions of the permit area were originally surface mined in 1970 prior to enactment of the federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977. These previously mined areas had been left in a poorly reclaimed condition which contributed to pollution and heavy sedimentation in the adjacent streams. Reclamation on the site was completed in the spring of 2013, and the area was properly restored to hay land and pasture and is now capable of producing hay and watering opportunities for future livestock.

The inspection staff assigned to this site includes Josh Hankins, Greg Logsdon and Robert Yonts. The site was nominated by Division of Mine Reclamation and Enforcement Madisonville Regional Office inspection personnel and selected by the Department because of the company’s outstanding reclamation work and its commitment to a healthy environment.
