yonts c 300MUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (1/20/14) — Rep. Brent Yonts, D-Greenville) has represented House District 15 since 1997. During that time, there are always surprises, he said.

Yonts told SurfKY News Sunday that he believes the General Assembly session that has just begun will be no different.

"Anytime you go to Frankfort, there are always surprises," Yonts said. “So far, however, this session has gone smoothly."

One bill that passed last week, which Yonts said was not a surprise, was legislation dealing with violence involving unmarried couples.

"We did address a bill dealing with dating violence. This bill will focus on couples, who are not married, but who are dating,” he said. “If passed, this law will deal with abuse. It will allow individuals to obtain protective orders from the court."

Yonts also noted that another issue that should continue to gain momentum are laws aimed at bullying in schools.

"Rep. Rita Smart, (D-Madison County), brought some very intelligent school children to Frankfort, who have been the victims of school bullying. Madison County now has an organized effort to stop this alarming trend," Yonts said. "We passed the bill unanimously. The House bill will be brought up for passage sometime this week."

Yonts said that the legislative branch will have a better road map as far as how bumpy this session will be later this week.

"Gov. (Steve) Beshear will make an address this Tuesday night dealing with the state's budget situation." Yonts said. "This can be heard on KET. He will tell us what he proposes to do with the money the state is projected to take in over the next two years."

Yonts said there is also a big issue coming up about the Center Street development in Madisonville. Officials in Madisonville are lobbying to get a thoroughfare from Center Street to Island Ford Road running parallel to the Pennyrile Parkway in the state budget.

"I'm going to try to make sure that gets into the budget," Yonts said.
