Rep. Yonts Receives Kentucky Public Advocate Award

brent-yonts-award-picFRANKFORT, Ky. (6/23/14) — State Rep. Brent Yonts received the Kentucky Public Advocate Award Tuesday from Kentucky Public Advocate Ed Monahan.

Yonts, D-Greenville, earned the award for his sponsorship of 2014 House Bill 264 to improve efficiencies within the Department for Public Advocacy. HB 264 was signed into law by Governor Steve Beshear in April and will take effect on July 15.

“I was very pleased to work with Ed Monahan and the Public Advocates of Kentucky to ensure passage of this significant legislation for them. Public Advocates serve a much needed and noble purpose in Kentucky by providing legal defense for those who are poor and unable to afford an attorney,” said Yonts.

A provision that gives the department access to juvenile court files without a formal court order in specific cases, with written approval of the minor or his her guardian, is found in the new law. Requirements to expedite the appeals process for indigent defendants and ensure better accountability of the department are among the law’s other provisions, said Yonts.

Rep. Yonts represents the 15th House District which includes all of Muhlenberg County and portions of Christian and Hopkins counties.
