aviation dayFRANKFORT, KY (8/19/13) – National Aviation Day is observed in the United States on August 19 each year to celebrate the history and development of aviation.

This day also coincides with Orville Wright’s Birthday (August 19, 1871). The Wright Brothers were known to be the pioneer aviators of the United States.

Created by the presidential proclamation of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939, this day is also known as the “Wright Brother’s Day.”

The Wright Brothers were given the credit for building the world’s first successful airplane and aircraft controls. Orville was the first person to successfully fly an airplane. His first flight was on December 17, 1903, at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina which lasted 12 seconds and was in flight for 120 feet.

Although National Aviation Day is a federal observance, it is not a public holiday.
