Church, Community Welcome Home Watsons

watsonsreturnMUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (2/14/14) — Pastor Tim Burden summed up the Watson family as "a loving, caring family." The two remaining members of the family returned to the church where they spent so much of their time, Calvary Baptist Church in Central City.

After taking a drive by Muhlenberg County High School West Campus to the cheers of friends and family, Chad and Kylie headed to the church they loved so. Once the congregation was inside the fellowship hall, there were no media, no camera lights or news reporters. One church member said it had nothing to do with not being appreciative of the media's show of respect.

Burden told SurfKY News outside the gathering that this gathering was to remind the two remaining Watsons that this is still their church.

"The Watsons are a loving, caring family," Burden said.

Chad Watson has announced that he wants to spread the word that if he and his daughter can survive the death of a wife and eight children, others can overcome whatever God has put in their ways.

Burden said, "Our hearts are broken for eight children and a mom. We can't do anything about hat, but what we can do is be there for the family."

Original story about the Homecoming event being planned...

Watson purple ribbon 300

MUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (2/14/14) ― Who would have thought a week ago that Muhlenberg residents would be organizing a purple parade to "Welcome Home Chad and Kylie Watson"?

Chad and Kylie Watson were the only survivors of a Jan. 30 wood frame house fire, which left nine of 11 family members dead.

Now, just a week after the fire gutted the family's home in Depoy, Vanderbilt Critical Burn Unit doctors are sending Mr. Watson home. At this time, relative's say doctors have told them there appears to be no need for the skin graft. Watson's 11-year-old daughter will be back to Muhlenberg County Saturday.

According to Gail Johnson, one of the organizers of the event, Kylie had been released from Vanderbilt today, but is staying in a motel close to the Vanderbilt Hospital before returning to Muhlenberg County Saturday afternoon.

Tomorrow Kylie and Chad will be greeted by friends and well-wishers displaying Kylie's favorite color, purple. Many experts and friends alike thought both Chad and Kylie were in for a long bout with skin grafting or even worse. Chad Watson's doctors were deeply concerned with lung damage after Watson re-entered the burning house three times in attempts to save his family.

According to a press release from Gail Johnson, a member of the Muhlenberg County Board of Education Public Relations Community Education Department, and Vicki Yonts with the Felix Martin Foundation, the Watsons would leave Nashville by late morning and reach the Muhlenberg West Campus around 2:30  p.m. Saturday afternoon.

The organizers hope that even with a late notice that the Watson's would be returning, they hope to lift their spirits if businesses, churches and schools would put "Welcome Home Chad and Kylie" on their outdoor signage.

Although all times are estimated, it's anticipated that Kylie will pass by MCHS/West Campus and organizers hope to have a welcoming crowd gather at the parking lot by Kentucky 181 North.

Organizers hope that well-wishers will gather at the West Campus at 2:30 p.m. to make sure that the crowd doesn't miss the entourage.

Organizer Gail Johnson told SurfKY News that purple is Kylie's favorite color so everyone is encouraged to wear purple.
