Muhlenberg Vietnam 'Big Red One' Veteran Spreads the Word About Flag Day

vet flag 300MUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (6/17/13) – Millions of Americans all across the nation spent Flag Day, Friday, June 14, 2013, honoring our nation's banner of freedom, and reminding themselves' of just how lucky we are to live in the land of the Red, White and Blue.

For Joe Roney, a Muhlenberg County Vietnam veteran, who served in the Army's 1st Infantry, sometimes known as the "Big Red One", handing out the Red White and Blue in Greenville's Courthouse Square near the Veterans Memorial seemed the perfect way to remind others of the true meaning of the day, and just how truly blessed we are to live in the home of the Red, White and Blue.

"I'm just here to help make people more aware of the true meaning of Flag Day." Roney told Surfky.com News. "This is my first year of handing of flags. I decided I'd hand out 300 this year, and if it goes over, I'll bring a thousand flags next year. I thought this would be a great way to remember all our troops from the past, along with those that are serving now and our veterans back home. That's what this is all about. Just to help make people aware of our fighting men and women, that there are still Americans out there fighting in harm’s way."

As many walked by enjoying the bright sunshine Friday on the courthouse square, Roney handed each a small flag and reminded those who stopped to thank him for his service, that they might spend a moment at the square's Veteran's Memorial. The wall of names features local soldiers, past and present, who have served in conflicts from World War I to our nation's ongoing conflicts throughout the Middle East.

Greenville Mayor Ed DeArmond, also a war veteran, stopped by the square to encourage Roney as numerous people took a flag to help spread the word.

"This is a great thing that Joe is doing. It's something new. He went out and purchased his own flags. He is a great veteran and he fought in one of the worst battles of the Vietnam War. He's a decorated veteran, and we all owe him a debt of gratitude. He is, without a doubt, a true patriot." DeArmond said.

Maybe next Flag Day, Roney will be joined by many more local people, helping to make his vision of handing out thousands rather than hundreds of flags a reality. And maybe reminding citizens you don't have to wait for Flag Day to take a moment to search the hundreds of names on the courtyard's Veterans Monument.

"These are the brave men and women who help keep our flag flying high." Roney said.
