Muhlenberg Art Instructors Featured at Duncan Center

duncan center 300GREENVILLE, Ky. (6/21/13) – The most recent “Meet the Artists” event, held at the Duncan Center on Cherry Street in Greenville, was, according to attendees, a huge success.
 
The artwork of three major Muhlenberg County art educators, Leigh Ellen Stewart, Jessica Whitehouse and Kim McClellan, showed the packed crowd that Muhlenberg students are in good hands from an artistic educational standpoint.
 
The works of these three artists will remain on display until the end of June.
 
Whitehouse, who teaches ninth and tenth grade students at the Muhlenberg High East Campus, stated that her classes focus largely on visual arts and photography.
 
“I enjoy all arts,” said Whitehouse, “but most of my works here today are oil paintings.”
 
Whitehouse went on to say that her entire family is involved in coal mining, a point that can be seen in her artwork.
 
When asked if her students ever inspired any of her art, Whitehouse said, “It’s gratifying and also very inspiring. I get a lot of my ideas from things the students steer me toward. At this age, they are energetic and anxious, so I try to create a calm atmosphere. I tell them, ‘let’s sit down and make something.’”
 
Kimberly McClellan teaches juniors and seniors in advanced classes in art at the Muhlenberg West Campus. Her portion of the exhibit concentrates on photography and several travel-related themes.
 
"I enjoy taking photographs of landscapes and architecture. All of my photos have at least some blue color in them, because I try to remember when I'm out taking photographs that I'm out in God's creations. It's spiritual to me when I'm taking a lot of my photographs. Trying to remember the beauty of Earth." McClellan said.
 
McClellan, much like Whitehouse, gave much credit for inspiration to her students. "We have a very talented group of students in the arts, and many of their ideas inspire me. Many of our just graduated seniors plan to pursue art as a profession, and right now, especially in marketing and other fields, there is room for them to grow and be creative as well." McClellan said.
 
Leigh E. Stewart, teaches grades nine through twelve at Muhlenberg West Campus and has taught high school visual art for over three decades. Stewart says her work is inspired by different things. “I'm inspired by my family, my students, whatever is available at the time," said Stewart.
 
Stewart also agrees wholeheartedly that she is inspired by students in her artwork.
 
"Definitely," she noted, pointing to a multicolored piece that appeared to be a teddy bear. "Every year my advance students introduce me to a contemporary artist. This piece was inspired by an artist named Greg Simkins, who is a graffiti artist."

The gallery is located at 122 South Cherry Street. Regular hours are weekdays, 11 a.m. through 4 p.m. through the end of June.
