Muhlenberg Board Makes Decision on Last Day of School Year

muhl school board 300POWDERLY, Ky. (2/27/14) – Snow days may be fun for students, but this year, the bad weather has created a real headache in deciding how and when to make up the days missed.

Wednesday night in a special session, the Mulhenberg County School System Board of Education addressed the issue and reached a final decision on what should be the last day of school for the 2013-2014 school year.

Ed McCarraher, Director of Pupil Personnel addressed the meeting, telling board members that after an extensive survey of teachers, parents' input, other factors, the decision was made to extend the school year calendar to Jun. 2 for students, and Jun. 3 for teachers.

However, if the county does get more bad weather, as is being predicted right now for Sunday and Monday, McCarraher noted that each day missed would be added on to the calendar day by day.

"We worked our day on a 170 day calendar," McCarraher said. "We did do a survey as to whether teachers and other staff members would like to extend the school year to June 6 and be done with it, or to make it up adding 27 minutes to each school day. Adding the minutes daily was the clear choice."
