'Another One Bites the 'Duct'

overlandCENTRAL CITY, Ky. (8/19/14) — Central City's South Second Street overpass is no stranger to semi truck wrecks.

For decades, numerous truckers have learned the hard way that a 12-foot-high truck just can't make it under an 11' 8" overpass.

From truckloads of tires to a semi loaded with bananas, the Central City overpass has seen more than its share of stuck trucks.

On Monday, Aug. 18, an Overland semi driver attempted the impossible. Luckily, even though the accident occurred just before noon in heavy a traffic area, there were no injuries. However, the top of the semi suffered severe damage and was a total loss.

Central City Police Officer Duane Davenport was one of several CCPD officers on the scene rerouting traffic around the wreck.

"The truck was on its way to make a delivery to Associated Pallets in Bremen," Davenport told SurfKY News.

Davenport noted that there are warning signs giving the exact clearance height, as well as flashing lights.

"There are warning signs and also signs showing the height of the overpass on South Second Street near 1st Kentucky Bank," Davenport said. "There are also warning signs leading up to the bridge."

Davenport said that trucks that are higher than the 11' 8" should take the warning signs and flashing lights seriously.
