WEBSTER COUNTY, Ky. (7/23/14) — The Kentucky Motorcycle Association, District 14 sponsored two Poker Runs during the Kentucky Bike Rally to benefit Happy Feet Equals Learning Feet, a non-profit organization that provides shoes to selected income eligible students pre-K through 12th grade.

The Kentucky Motorcycle Association is a volunteer organization dedicated to protecting the rights of all Kentucky motorcyclists.

The KMA has become the premier grassroots lobbying force in Kentucky on issues regarding motorcyclist. Through the efforts of our members we have been able to effect elections and bills moving through the Kentucky Legislature and the US Congress.

KMA District 14 covers Henderson, Union, Webster and Crittenden County. Proceeds from the Poker Runs were used to benefit these four counties of the Happy Feet Equals Learning Feet organization. District 14 sponsors several charity events each year such as this. District 14 also has a Corn Festival Poker Run to benefit Union County Happy Packs to help provide take home meals for school children as well as an annual Used Cell Phone collection drive to provide deployed soldiers International Calling Cards to be able to call home. In addition, the local KMA prepares Christmas Food Baskets and purchases Christmas gifts for Angel Trees in all four counties plus participates in rides to benefit Cancer Victims, Toys for Tots, and many others.

The Kentucky Motorcycle Association District 14 meets the second Saturday of each month and also have an organized ride each month as well as get together and ride most weekends. Happy Feet Equals Learning Feet, Inc. was created in 2009 by Jerry Baird, a retired coal miner from Union County. His goal was to remove one of the stumbling blocks to optimize school performance for the students of Union County. Not having basic personal items can distract a child from performing well in school. A new pair of shoes can help build self-esteem and reduce teasing and bullying.

Happy Feet has attempted to improve a child’s perspective about attending school by providing them with a quality pair of athletic shoes. A happy student becomes a better learner, thus the name “Happy Feet Equals Learning Feet.”

Since its creation in 2009 the Happy Feet program has grown rapidly. Happy Feet is now incorporated as a 501c3. Happy Feet includes Boyle, Caldwell, Carlisle, Crittenden, Daviess, Graves, Henderson, Hopkins, Livingston, Marshall, Mercer, Muhlenberg, Ohio, Union and Webster Counties plus Danville and Mayfield Independent Schools. They also have programs in Dawson Springs and Logan County/Russellville, who operate independently. The program provided shoes for 450 students their first year and 700 students the second year. In 2013, they provided 3000 pairs of shoes! They project an increase again in 2014.

The Happy Feet program has been expanded through the efforts of volunteers in each of the counties served.

They are responsible for coordinating events and fundraising in their areas using individual and business donations, yard sales, bake sales, raffles, and other activities as sources of funding. Several programs have been successful in procuring grants.

The Happy Feet program has established an accounting system to maintain separate accounts for each of the counties. This assists with tracking both the funds raised by each county and the purchases of shoes for students in that area. Funds raised in your area will help provide the less fortunate children of your community with one more tool to help them succeed in school. An individual monetary donation was received at all four counties from the Kentucky Motorcycle Association.
