Paducah City Commission Highlights – March 27, 2013

paducah city commission 300PADUCAH, Ky. (3/27/13) – The following are the highlights of Paducah City Commission meeting held on Tuesday, March 26, 2013.
 
The Commissioners approved a municipal order for a lease agreement between the Greater Paducah Economic Development Corporation (GPEDC, also known as Paducah Economic Development) and the City of Paducah and McCracken County. The City and County are leasing 8.71 acres of land in Paducah Commerce Park (formerly Information Age Park) on McCracken Boulevard from GPEDC for a term of 99 years for $1.00. The City, County, and GPEDC have partnered to provide a 30,000 square foot facility and parking lot for TeleTech Services Corporation. TeleTech will lease the facility that will be constructed in Paducah Commerce Park. This municipal order also assigns the lease agreement between GPEDC and TeleTech to the City and County. City Manager Jeff Pederson says, “This project is exciting since there will be a new facility in addition to the reinvestment of a very focal building in the community, the Commerce Center.” Pederson anticipates a decision within a couple of weeks regarding the contractor to design and build the facility in Paducah Commerce Park.
 
TeleTech plans to bring to Paducah a customer care (call) center and employ 450 full-time employees with benefits. The jobs would have a minimum salary of $9.50 per hour. The City of Paducah and the County are each providing $1.35 million toward the TeleTech project at Paducah Commerce Park with GPEDC providing $300,000. Following building renovations, approximately 150 employees would be at the Commerce Center at 401 Kentucky Avenue while 300 employees would be stationed in the facility to be constructed in the Paducah Commerce Park.
 
The Commissioners approved a municipal order to file an application for a Community Development Block Grant in the amount of $250,000 on behalf of Four Rivers Behavioral Health for the CenterPoint Recovery Center for Men. The funds would be used for salaries. The grant does not require a local match. If the grant application is approved, an administration fee of $12,500 will be paid to the City for maintaining and monitoring the funding. A public hearing to discuss the project and application will be held April 9 at 1 p.m. in the Commission Chambers at City Hall. CenterPoint is a recovery center located on County Park Road for men who are recovering from substance abuse. Four Rivers Chief Operating Officer Patty Hughes says CenterPoint’s staff of 19 employees provided services for 235 men last year. The facility has a high success rate with 75% of the men reporting abstinence from drugs and alcohol one year after completing the program.
 
Quick Highlights:
• Fire Chief Steve Kyle introduced his department’s new employees. The new employees are fire fighter recruits Jacob Blackwell, Justin Gray, Matt Meiser, and Brian Pendergrass, and Deputy Fire Marshal Christina Gowen.
• City Manager Pederson says the work to clear out the former Executive Inn Showroom is going smoothly and in its final stages. He praised the work of the Parks and Engineering-Public Works staff in completing this project internally.
• Pederson says budget season will begin with in-depth meetings between department directors, the finance department, and him in the next couple of weeks. A pre-budget workshop will be scheduled to brief the Mayor and Commissioners. Pederson expects three currently unfilled city positions will be eliminated from the budget.
• It is anticipated that next Tuesday’s Commission meeting will be cancelled.
