Blue Collar Comments – The Library, What Were They Thinking?

bluecc300 DHOPKINS COUNTY, KY (5/1/13) – To the people of Hopkins County, the Library is at the mall. It was downtown. The library paid $85,000.00 for the Annex building next to the library. Now, someone has come up with a winner, as they are going to sell the buildings for $1.00. You heard me, a one-dollar bill.

Now, I ask you…What kind of deal is that? You buy a building for 85 grand and turn around and sell if for one dollar?

On East Center, the library paid for a building that once was occupied by Save-A-Lot. Now, the library says this is where the library is going to be. Now you have an empty building that is setting there….with no library in it.

Let’s back up a few years. I went to a Fiscal Court meeting. For five years in a row the Fiscal Court gave the library $100,000 to upgrade the third floor of the library on South Main Street. This is a ½ million dollars. Now, you have two empty buildings to show for it.

They were told by the Fiscal Court that the library could move into the old courthouse. Their answer? “No.” It’s apparent that they want the mansion on the hill instead.

The trust fund that was left to the library, I don’t know how much it was, but now they are trying to get that money to pay for the building on East Center. First they were downtown. Then they moved to the mall. Now they are trying to move into the building where Save-A-Lot was. When is the spending going to stop?

If you add up the pay for the Mayor, the City Council, the Judge and the County Magistrates, it comes to around $365,941.56. These are people that the citizens of the area have elected. The pay for the library, the Director and other library employees is over $400,000! All this to run one building, while the lesser amount runs a city and a county.

When is the city and county going to stop feeding money into the black hole, which is the library?

In closing, I think the money that the city and county give the library could be put to good use, not thrown into a black hole that keeps swallowing it and demands more.
