Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebrations Planned

mlk 300HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky (1/6/14) - Madisonville Community College (MCC) will be hosting a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on Wednesday, January 15, from 12 – 1 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of the John H. Gray Building located on the college’s North Campus (2000 College Drive in Madisonville).
 
Included in the celebration will be the viewing of recorded interviews with local civil rights pioneers. Michael Lowery, a participant in the 1963 March on Washington, will be the Master of Ceremonies. Sylvia Chase, President of MCC’s Multicultural Student Association, will read a reflection piece along with musical selections performed by MCC faculty member Roshun Radford. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Gregory Stallworth. He is the Executive Director of the Equal Employment Opportunity of Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and has more than 23 years of leadership experience pertaining to human relations, human development, and human rights.

Also, the Hopkins County Martin Luther King Celebration Committee in cooperation with Madisonville Community College will present the 30th Annual Celebration honoring the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Saturday, January 18, beginning at 4 p.m. in the Byrnes Auditorium located in the Hatley Building on MCC’s Health Sciences Campus (750 North Laffoon Street in Madisonville).
 
The event’s theme is “Committed to Fulfilling the Dream” and will feature the Kentucky State University Concert Choir under the direction of Dr. Philip J. Rogers. Also performing will be the Hopkins County Community MLK Youth Mass Choir. The Rev. Dr. Damon Lynch, Jr. will be the keynote speaker. Since 1970, Rev. Lynch has served as the pastor of the New Jerusalem Baptist Church in Cincinnati, Ohio. During his early ministry years, he worked with the giants of the Civil Rights Movement and continues to be a strong advocate.
 
Doors will open at 3:15 p.m. Admission is free; an offering will be received to support the MCC MLK Scholarship Fund. Two scholarship recipients will be announced during this year’s celebration.
