Scoping It Out: Nine Years Later and ‘Mean Girls’ is Still Just so Relatable

friends 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (10/3/13) - ‘Mean Girls’ came out when I was in the eighth grade. I remember it like it was yesterday, though. My six girlfriends and I went 15 miles to the nearest theater to sit in a packed room full of other tweens that wanted to see the girl from ‘The Parent Trap’ all grown up.

It was actually perfect timing that the movie came out when it did; one more year and we would be starting high school. I remember sitting in that movie, thinking that high school was going to be exactly like Cady Heron’s experience. I was part afraid and part thrilled. To this day, ‘Mean Girls’ is the most-watched movie in my collection; I can literally quote every single word (Go on, try me!).

‘Mean Girls’, even almost ten years later (omg!), is still so relatable to 20-something girls. The quotes have stood the test of time and since it’s October 3rd, National ’Mean Girls’ Day, the day that Aaron Samuels finally talked to Cady in Calculus, I’ll share a couple of my favorites:

“You can’t sit with us.” You think you got away from mean girls in high school? Think again. Mean girls are everywhere. They’re in the workplace, in your sorority, on your campus, and can even be your best friends. I’m convinced that your mom was right, jealousy is the number one reason girls are mean, whether you’re 14 or 114. But, you can’t be sorry that people are so jealous of you, you can’t help it that you’re so popular. All jokes aside, unfortunately, you may never get away from the wrath of a mean girl, it’s just a fact of life.

“She’s a life ruiner, she ruins people’s lives”. Whether it’s now or in high school, there is always that one friend in your group that’s considered a ‘frenemy”. Because the weird thing about hanging out with the Regina-types was that you could hate her, and at the same time, you still want her to like you. You don’t want to see anything bad happen to her, per say, but if she gained 5 lbs, would that be so bad?

“When did it become okay for one person to be the boss of everybody, huh? Because that’s not what Rome is about. We should totally just stab Caesar!” Okay, I’m kind of embarrassed but I used this quote to help guide me through Julius Caesar in English 335 last year. Regina George as Caesar helped me get an A.

“Don’t let the haters stop you from doing your thang.” This is just like so inspirational, it speaks for itself.

‘Mean Girls’ is a 20-something girl’s bible. They can quote it from beginning to end with no hesitation, and they often compare it to their everyday lives. So, today, make your move on Aaron Samuels, hang out with the greatest people you’ve ever met or the worst, practice your best ‘Jingle Bell Rock’ for the talent show, and try to make ‘fetch’ happen, because it’s National ‘Mean Girls’ Day. It’s the one day a year a girl can quote ‘Mean Girls’ all she wants, and no other girls can say anything about it.
