Scoping It Out: Why Halloween is the Best 'Holiday' Ever

halloween hend1OWENSBORO, Ky. (10/24/13) - Halloween might not technically be considered a holiday, but it is to me.

All Hallow’s Eve is a time for frights and delights, tricks and treats, and numerous photo ops. Here are a couple of my reasons why the pagan holiday is my favorite:

–You can look as unattractive as possible and it’s all in the name of a funny/scary costume. You don’t have to take yourself seriously on Halloween, unless that’s what you’re into. The sexy costume may get more Instagram “likes”, but in my experience, it’s way more fun bopping around in a warm, footed onesie. My version of sexy.

–You don’t have to get anyone a gift. It’s not Valentine’s Day; it’s not Christmas. It’s all about you! And on that note, you have to admit, couples costumes are stupid. I mean, nothing says devotion like a Pooh and Tigger costume. Cute.

–Group costumes, on the other hand, are the best. My sophomore year of college, a few of my friends and I dressed up as the cast of Saved by the Bell. I loved prancing around in high-waisted, acid-wash jeans, turtleneck blouse, and my “Jessie Spano for President” button. I sang “I’m So Excited” at the top of my lungs and then I would go into a dramatic rendition of her addiction to caffeine pills…“I’m so scared!” all night long. It was a great time until we tried to round up the crew and realized Screech was nowhere to be found, but who’s surprised?

–The movies. “Thackery! Thackery Binx!” Hocus Pocus is obviously the best Halloween movie ever. The Sanderson sisters have been a sassy sensation for over 20 years now, which shows the movie truly stands the test of time.

–Candy. Obviously I’m too old to trick-or-treat (or am I?). I look forward to this day, because my mom still gives me a jack-o-lantern filled with delicious Butterfingers, Nerds and Smarties. Deliciouso!

–Being scared is the best. I am in a constant state of fear that Michael Myers is right behind me. There are so many sequels, I can’t remember if he finally died or not.

–If you’re social, there’s always a party. Even if you don’t have any friends, you can walk down the street in any town, and you’ll find a place to get your groove on.

If you’re anti-social, you don’t have to participate. Turn the porch light off and go to bed.

Lastly, Halloween is for the young and for the young at heart. It’s the only “holiday” that kids and adults can act exactly the same. There’s no pressure to be a grown-up. And this year, that’s exactly what I’m looking forward to the most.
