Barker brings 29 years of coaching experience at the high school and college levels and a total combined record of 512 wins and 287 losses to this position.

“I cannot explain my excitement about becoming the new head basketball coach at Apollo High School, the place where I played and have loved my whole life,” Barker said. “I’m excited about the young talent and potential that Apollo High School basketball has for the years to come. We will start working immediately to set the standard for quality play in Region 3 and across the state. I have been looking forward to this opportunity for many years.”

In making the announcement, AHS Principal Charles Broughton said, “Coach Barker brings a wealth of coaching experience to our boys’ basketball program. He has a proven track record of success. He has a passion for Apollo and we are excited about the future of boys’ basketball under his leadership.”

Barker is currently serving as head basketball coach at McLean County High School, a position he has held since 2009. He was voted Region 3 Coach of the Year in 2012 and led his team to the Region 3 All A Championship.

He began his coaching career in 1985 at LaGrange (Ga.) College, where he also served as intramural director. Barker coached at Brewton-Parker College in Mount Vernon, Ga., from 1990 - 2008, recording 425 wins and earning designation as the James Naismith George Tip-Off Club NAIA Coach of the Year. He was also named Southern States Athletic Conference Basketball Coach of the Year and Southern States Athletic Conference Athletic Director of the Year. He served as the “Champions of Character” community service project coordinator and as director of various basketball camps and tournaments.

Barker joined the staff of the Robert Toombs Christian Academy in 2008, earning a 24-6 record and advancing to the Georgia Independent School Association Elite Eight.

Barker is returning to Apollo High School after graduating as a member of the Class of 1978. He was a member of the 1976 and 1978 Apollo basketball teams that were region 3 champions. The 1978 team finished the season 35-1. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala., where his jersey was retired in 1982 as the school’s second all-time leading scorer (1,902 points). He has a master’s degree in special education from Campbellsville University.

Barker replaces Steve Sergeant, who stepped down at the conclusion of the 2013-14 season.
