Pitching Dominates Third Scrimmage of Fall Season

UK3 300LEXINGTON, Ky. (10/2/13) - Scoreless outings from Dylan Dwyer, ChandlerShepherd, Trace Vorbeck, Zach Strecker and Spencer Jack highlighted thethird scrimmage of the Kentucky baseball fall practice season, on a gorgeous Tuesday afternoon at Cliff Hagan Stadium.

Dwyer, a sophomore southpaw, worked two shutout innings in a start for the Blue team, allowing just one base runner on a hit by pitch and striking out one. Jack worked a scoreless inning with a strikeout and a walk. Right-hander Andrew Nelson worked 1.2 innings, allowing one hit and two runs one earned -walking three and striking out one.

For Black, Shepherd worked two scoreless innings, dancing around a pair of first-inning, two-out singles. A native of Louisa, Ky., Shepherd struck out two in his two innings of work, allowing three base hits. Vorbeck worked a scoreless third inning, before freshman lefty Logan Salow worked over one inning, allowing one run on two hits and three walks, striking out one. Strecker tossed a scoreless top of the sixth inning, with three quick groundouts.

Black got on the board in the fourth inning, as Michael Thomas and Dorian Hariston drew walks with one out, advancing a base on a wild pitch. Greg Fettes then hung a sacrifice fly into centerfield to score Thomas and give Black a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Blue rallied with a pair of two-out walks from Marcus Carson and Zach Arnold, before freshman infielder Connor Heady smashed a double down the leftfield line to score Carson with two outs and two strikes.

In the top of the fifth, Black took a lead, as Tyler Tipton reached on a fielding error by the pitcher, taking second on Troy Squires sacrifice bunt and moving to third on a wild pitch. After Austin Cousino was hit by a pitch and stole second, Max Kuhn delivered an RBI single into leftfield to score Tipton.

Blue got hits from Heady, Thomas Bernal, Andrew Bryant and Jacob Russell. Black saw its from Hairston and Kuhn. Cousino was hit by two pitches and stole a base.
