Outdoors with Big Country – October is Deer Month

bow huntingKENTUCKY (10/4/13) – It’s October already, folks, and that means that it’s hunting season for each week, all month long, all across the state of Kentucky.

Archery season is in full swing and the weather coming up soon has a great forecast, starting Sunday on the 6th day of October, with the low temps in the 40’s! This will certainly get the deer up and moving!

I’ve been in the whitetail woods a few times this week, scouting, and the white oak acorns are starting to fall as we speak. Remember that the deer’s’ favorite mass crop is the white oak acorn!

It’s time to get your boots on and grab a good pair of binoculars and get out and do some intensive scouting!

The weekend of the 12th and 13th is Youth Firearms Season in Kentucky. The 19th and 20th is Early Muzzle Loader Weekend, and for you crossbow hunters, crossbow season is October 1—20 for deer and turkey! Early Fall shotgun season for Wild Turkey is open from October 26-November 1.

All this in mind, October is packed full of hunting activity for many options, for everyone! Kentucky is one of the top states in the U.S. for deer and turkey hunts, and local hunters are given so many different ways to hunt. Archery, Muzzleloader, rifle and crossbow season on deer goes from September through January with different dates for different weapons.

Check your Kentucky Hunting Guide closely for all your correct laws and season per each county area, because they differ across the state! The most popular season is Kentucky Firearm season, which is open from November 9 -24 in area zones 1 and 2 in Kentucky. Be prepared to hunt and have a good time afield with family and friends, but most of all… be safe!

A successful hunt is a safe hunt. Do your homework. Shoot your weapon before going afield to make sure that it hits where it’s supposed to.

Make it a great season this year, and if you do harvest a trophy, don’t forget that you can send us your picture. Take a good clear phone; include your name and the area of the deer or turkey hunt. Try to make sure when you take the photo that the sun is behind you. Also, try to make sure that no blood is in the photo if possible, and any other details that you would like to share about your trophy hunt.

We would like to thank everyone for following us here at ‘Outdoors with Big Country.” Check us out on Facebook!

Have a great season and the best of luck!
