Tradewater Pirates Changes Name to Madisonville Miners

tradewaterp5MADISONVILLE, Ky. (9/4/13) – The shareholders and Board of Directors of the Madisonville Tradewater Pirates are excited to announce plans to change the name of the local summer collegiate baseball team to the Madisonville Miners beginning with the upcoming 2014 season.
 
The rebranding of the team ties today’s wooden bat collegiate league team to Madisonville’s baseball roots. According to sports history web site pasttimebaseballleague.com, the city’s first professional baseball team, a KITTY League team called the Madisonville Miners, was formed in 1916.
 
“The Tradewater Pirates have called Madisonville home for two seasons, and the organization is steadily building a strong fan base,” said Tricia Noel, president of the board of directors. “While we respect the Tradewater Pirates name and legacy, everyone in the organization felt that it was time to bring the Miners name back to Madisonville. Also, with most of the other OVL teams playing under their old KITTY league names, it is the right thing to do. We discussed the idea of the name change with various community stakeholders before we made the final decision, and all of the feedback we received was very supportive of the idea. Other than the name on the uniform changing, the operations of the organization will not change in any manner.”
 
The Madisonville Miners are a member of the Ohio Valley League, which includes teams in Hopkinsville, Fulton, Marion, Owensboro, and Dubois County, Indiana. The name change will be subject to OVL approval, which is expected to be finalized at the next league meeting in October.
