My Kentucky Roads: The Sexton House

RUSSELLVILLE, Ky. (8/3/13) - Built back in 1870, the famous Sexton House lies on the corner of Maple Grove Cemetery in Russellville, Ky. It is the home for the cemetery's sexton, which is an old-fashioned term for caretaker.

Most residents of Russellville know the story about the Sexton House or the "Russellville Girl," whose true name is not known.

As legend has it, around the turn of the century, the daughter of the caretaker at the time was anxiously getting ready for her beau to pick her up and take her to a dance when a dangerous storm rolled in. According to folklore, she was so upset about the storm that she went to her bedroom window and cursed God. After doing so, she was struck by lighting and her image was forever burned into the window. For years and years, people would say that on a stormy day you could still see her reflection in the window. It was such a disturbance to the neighboring traffic, the window panes were painted over. However, her image was still seen, according to legend.

Today, the window is boarded up.
