Christmas Tree Safety Tips Offered

christmas tree inside 300LEXINGTON, Ky. (12/12/13) — Families everywhere are picking out the perfect Christmas tree to put presents under this holiday season. However, there are certain things to remember when doing so. According to the National Fire Protection Association, fire departments respond to about 210 fires caused by Christmas trees every year.

The National Fire Protection Association offered the following tips on how to decorate a Christmas tree this year in a way to make the holiday safer.

• When picking a tree, choose one with fresh green needles that do not fall off when touched. If it's an artificial tree, be sure it is labeled, certified, or identified by the manufacturer as fire retardant.

• Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, is not blocking an exit, and that water is added to the tree stand daily.

• Use lights that have an independent testing laboratory label and always turn Christmas lights off when you leave your house or go to bed.

• After Christmas, get rid of real trees, when it starts to dry out and the needles begin to drop.
