KENTUCKY (1/15/14) - Using a little science, you can pick up thousands of pieces of rice with one pencil?
. Water Bottle
STEP 1: Fill the empty water bottle all of the way to the top with rice.
STEP 2: Tap the empty water bottle against a hard surface until the rice set-tles into the bottle.
STEP 3: Force the sharpened pencil into the rice. Pull the sharpened pencil up and down a few times without removing the pencil.
STEP 4: Push the sharpened pencil into the rice once last time and attempt to pull the pencil out of the rice.
When you attempted to pull the pencil out of the rice you actually lifted the entire bottle. There are pockets of air between the pieces of rice. Each time you pushed the sharpened pencil into the rice, the pockets of air push out of the bottle, and the pieces of rice replace the pockets of air. This continues until the pencil gets stuck in the rice. The pencil gets stuck because of friction, which is a force created between the pencil and rice rubbing together.
