WEBSTER COUNTY, Ky. (3/20/13) - Clay City Council was in session briefly on Tuesday March 12, 2013 with a very short agenda.

City Clerk Julianna Rhye reported that the city had received several complaints on two adjacent properties on Lisman Street. Both properties were reported to be in bad shape and that something needed to be done about them.

Rhye also reported that a Clay resident had contacted them after reading the article last month on Clay’s annual audit. He was concerned that the city was raising utility rates.

“He asked that before making such a decision that the city consider that these are hard times,” she told the council.

At the February meeting auditor Mike Overby recommended that the council take a serious look at the business assets of the city, gas, sewer and water all three operated at a loss last year.

“This is your major source of income,” Overby said. “If you want to make money, rates are going to have to go up.”

Rhye wanted to point out to residents that this was just a recommendation and that no decision had been made.

“And if it does go up, it won't go up very much at all,” she said.

Clay Fire Chief Jeremy Moore presented the council with the monthly fire report. Clay Rescue responded to 10 calls in February, bringing the yearly total to 30. The fire department made one run for a total of three this year.

“I would like to give a special thanks to Webb Memorial Church and the American Red Cross,” he said. “They provided shelter during last month's power outage.”

In April the city of Clay plans to host a drug awareness speaker. The planned topic is to be way to recognize drug abuse. The tentative date and time for the event is April 11, 2013 at 6:00 p.m.

Councilwoman Patty Dennis also told the council that Saturday April 22 would be Drug Toss Day in Webster County. Residents can bring expired drugs to various locations in each town, where they will be handed over to Sheriff Frankie Springfield.

With no other business to attend to, the council entered closed session to discuss personnel.

Following the session Mayor Rick Householder announced that the city of Clay would be hiring Lonnie Rogers of Hopkins County to fill an opening with the Clay Police Department. Rogers is a former officer with the Dawson Springs Police Department.
