Land Between The Lakes Hosting Public Meetings to Discuss Roads

lbl ariel1GOLDEN POND, Ky. (7/8/13) – Land Between The Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area will host three informational public meetings to discuss their road system.

Meetings will be held at 5:30pm in the following gateway communities:

• Tuesday, July 16, at Lake Barkley State Resort Park Convention Center,
3500 State Park Road, Cadiz, KY

• Friday, July 26, at Stewart County Visitor Center,
117 Visitor Center Lane, Dover, TN

• Tuesday, July 30, at Grand Rivers Senior/Community Center,
155 W. Cumberland Avenue, Grand Rivers, KY

Nationally, the USDA Forest Service is required to identify National Forest System roads no longer needed to meet forest resource management objectives. Transportation Analysis Process (TAP) provides a critical first step towards the development of proposed actions towards the future “minimum road system.”

Approximately 65 miles of the 475 miles of existing LBL roads will be evaluated. Any road which accesses a cemetery or is maintained by the state of Kentucky or Tennessee will not be changed or recommended for change by this process. LBL management requests that people come to these meetings to learn about the process and discuss what roads are most important to them.

“Land Between The Lakes has a tradition of going to the public for ideas and direction. I want to continue this tradition and reach out to the public for this initial stage of our road analysis; even though this initial process does not require public input,” says Tina Tilley, new Area Supervisor at Land Between The Lakes.

This exercise will help to establish what roads exist now, what is needed for access, and what is affordable in the future. The knowledge gained from these meetings will be incorporated into a final Transportation Analysis Report. Before any decisions are made in the future, the public will be asked for additional comments.
