Over $1.8 Million in Projects Approved for Tri-County Area

grant money 300FRANKFORT, Ky. (3/13/13) – Over $1.8 million in state and federal funds was approved today by a state legislative oversight committee for projects and services in Hopkins, Christian and Muhlenberg counties.

The Hopkins County Fiscal Court will receive $1 million in federal funds to relocate 11 low and moderate income families while their housing is being rehabilitated and reconstructed.

State Rep. Brent Yonts, D-Greenville, a member of the Government Contract Review Committee that approves the funds, said the project involves rehabilitating or reconstructing 10 low and moderate income replacement homes after dilapidated homes at the site are demolished.

“One additional home will receive major rehabilitation,” said Yonts.

Also approved was $75,000 in coal severance funds for sewer equipment for the City of Central City. Yonts said the funds will be used to provide meters, software, training and other services in Central City.

Other funding approved by the committee was an additional $7,500 in state General Funds to Pennyroyal Mental Health in Hopkinsville for administration of the Hart Supported Living Program which serves the disabled, and an additional $1,200 in federal funds to the Christian County Board of Education to hire an educational recovery specialist.

“The contractor will work with staff in persistently low-achieving schools—as identified by criteria of the No Child Left Behind Act, state law and state Department of Education regulations—with instruction and school improvement, emphasizing reading and math,” said Yonts.

More improvements for the region will be approved when state road bids are let by the state Transportation Cabinet next Friday, March 22 in Frankfort. Two area projects are scheduled to be bid, including:
• Construction of turn lanes at various locations in Powderly on Robert L. Draper Way, or KY 189, in Muhlenberg County, and;
• Blacktopping in Hopkins County on Arcadia Avenue from the Caldwell County line east to just east of Holmes Street, and on W. Noel Avenue from US 41A east to Murray Street.
