Secretary of State Grimes Presents Award to Muhlenberg Middle School Student

grimes 300MUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (4/11/13) – On April 9, 2013, Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes presented a $1,000 cash prize to Kassidy Cobb, a sixth-grade home school student in Muhlenberg County, for winning first place in Grimes’ office’s annual slogan contest. The slogan contest was created in 1988 to inspire students to be active and informed citizens, with particular emphasis on election-related issues.

Cobb’s slogan, “Make a choice. Use your voice. VOTE!” received the most votes in an online poll. Grimes presented Cobb’s award at the Civic Health Initiative roundtable event at Henderson Community College, congratulating Cobb on her achievement and thanking her for helping spread the important message that every Kentuckian’s voice matters. “Kentucky is at its best when everyone’s voice is heard,” said Grimes. “It’s great to have students like Kassidy encouraging people to participate in the process.”

Following the award presentation, Grimes facilitated a panel discussion of strategies to improve civic engagement in Kentucky. The event was the 11th in a statewide series of roundtables at Kentucky’s universities and colleges. Grimes will host four more events in the Initiative:

• April 22, 10:30 a.m. ET – University of Louisville
• April 24, 10:00 a.m. ET – Hazard Community & Technical College
• April 25, 1:00 p.m. ET – Elizabethtown Community & Technical College
• May 1, 11:00 a.m. ET – University of Pikeville

“We’ve had a great response to the Civic Health Initiative,” said Grimes. “The events have brought together students, educators, elected officials and community leaders to formulate fresh strategies for moving Kentucky forward. I am excited to continue working together to strengthen Kentucky.”
