Rotary Sponsors Seventh Annual Taste of Muhlenberg Fundraiser

appetizersMUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (4/22/14) — Chefs, restaurateurs and caterers from throughout the county and beyond will serve up mouth-watering delectables Monday, April 28 at the Seventh Annual Taste of Muhlenberg fundraiser.

David Richey of the Rotary Club of Muhlenberg County, sponsor of the event, told SurfKY News that once again the Taste of Muhlenberg County will be held at the Muhlenberg High School West Campus gymnasium. Richey said a large crowd is expected for the yearly feast.

"We are expecting well over 400 people again this year," Richey said. "We have had a huge turnout each year, and it just keeps getting better. Best of all, all proceeds go to help raise funds for a variety of worthy causes. We have over 20 restaurants signed up already to participate this year. We are prepared to serve as many as 500 people. We'll also have two cash drawings for $500. Once again this year, we'll have the Muhlenberg High School Jazz Band performing, along with music from Wendell Miller's Sight and Sound. So, there will be plenty of great music in addition to the great food."

Richey noted that each vendor will serve up bite-size servings of items from their various menus. He said the variety of food items is what really makes this event such a great success.

"The great thing about this event is that it features everything from local fast food restaurants to sit down restaurants and specialty shops that sell sweets and baked items," he said. "You can find just about any type of food you might want, all in one place. We give out awards and plagues to various vendors as well. We do have several vendors from outside the county again this year. It's very seldom you can showcase your food to this many people at once. We really appreciate the restaurants and others that participate. They take the time and spend the money to present their menu items. But we feel it's a great marketing tool for them as well. It's a win-win situation."

Richey, who is vice president of First Security Bank, noted that all the proceeds will go for charitable efforts of the Rotary Club of Muhlenberg County.

"We are very active in supporting the spray park in Central City," he said. "And, at Christmas time, we help the family resource center at one of the local schools. These are just two examples of what our funds raised from this event go to help."

Richey said vendors will be judged on appearance, taste and presentation. Last year's first place winners included Sammie's Salads & Such in the fast food category, Smoking Toby's took top honors for the casual dining category, Maple Manor won first place in the catering category, and the winner in the bakery dessert category was Evie Does It. Last year's People's Choice award went to the MCHS Culinary Arts Department.

Doors open 5 p.m. and service runs from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 for ages 6 to adults. Tickets are available from any Rotary Club of Muhlenberg County member.
