mcc1 300MUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (5/6/14) — With graduation rapidly approaching, high school seniors and their families face important decisions about choosing a college.

Based on affordability and quality, Muhlenberg County students can hardly go wrong in choosing to stay close to home for their first two years and attend the Muhlenberg County Campus of Madisonville Community College.

MCC is consistently rated one of the nation’s top community colleges as determined by the Aspen Institute. Penny Jessup, student affairs specialist at the Muhlenberg County Campus, emphasizes the affordability of MCC where tuition is less than 40 percent of public four-year universities in Kentucky. “This allows students to avoid large student loan debts often discussed on the news, but our students transfer with an Associate of Arts or Associate of Sciences degree with junior standing on those institutions.”

Ken Robinson, President and CEO of the Muhlenberg Alliance for Progress and part of the team that secured state recognition for Muhlenberg County as a “Work Ready Community in Progress,” stresses the importance of more county students earning the associate degree. “Full recognition for Muhlenberg County as a Work-Ready Community will require at least 470 students with associate degrees, and MCC offers so many options and such great accessibility for our young people, as well as adult learners who may qualify for financial incentives if they already have college credits but need to return to college to complete their associate degree, that this should be possible.” MCC offers more than twenty career programs with several completely online such as energy management.

“We hope”, Robinson adds, “that many of these students attending MCC will remain in this community and be an active part of it as Muhlenberg reaps the economic benefits as a Work Ready Community.”

Muhlenberg County students who started their college work but did not complete an associate degree may, through a generous partnership with the Felix E. Martin Foundation, qualify for additional financial help to return and complete their associate degree.
