Hundreds Enjoy Lake Malone 'Fish with a Kid Day'

Lake-Malone-Fish-with-kid-2

DUNMOR, Ky. (6/16/14) — Mike Kirby's Sixth Annual 'Fish with a Kid Day' held Saturday, June 14, brought families from near and far to Lake Malone State Park.

In fact, one family drove from all the way from Lawrenceburg, Ky., more than 150 miles away.

Before the day was over, there were lots of smiling faces in the huge crowd. The biggest smile of all belonged to 6-year-old Jase Mefford of Beechmont. Young Mefford won the grand prize of the event a brand new Jon boat, trailer, boat motor and other accessories. Mefford's mother, Kasey, told SurfKY News that this was likely one of the most exciting days of his life.

"Jase loves to fish," she said. "In fact, he has been saving up his money to buy a boat...and a pond."

Although there was no pond included in the prize package, Mefford, and several hundred others between 4 and 15 years of age enjoyed a day on the lake with family and friends, along with prizes that ranged from fishing tackle to new bicycles.

After several hours of family fishing, the Father's Day weekend crowd packed the Lake Malone pavilion area to enjoy free barbecue, hamburgers, hot dogs, the Shriner clowns and well over a hundred prize winners.

Among the many volunteers helping to make sure the day went smoothly were members of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife. Sgt. Scott McIntosh said the event is something that can make a difference in every child's life.

"This is a chance for young people who might not have had a chance to fish before," McIntosh said. "It gets them outdoors. If we make it a positive day of fishing, when they get old enough they will remember this day, and it could make a real difference in their life for years to come."

Dan Walker of Beechmont was one of the happy fathers enjoying a relaxing day.

"I think it's a great way to get families out together. This is a special day we look forward to every year. My daughter caught seven blue gill. She loves to fish, at least for the first hour," he said with a smile.

Aaron Cobb of Dunmor also was all smiles, spending the day with daughters Amy, Delaney and Kasseidy.

"I love to take my children out fishing," Cobb said. "They always have fun. It's a fun event that gives people a chance to take a day off from work and spend time with their family and friends. I'm also glad we have this event at Lake Malone. It seems sometimes that this end of the county gets left out when it comes to activities like this."

Although it was hard to estimate the total attendance, with families coming and going from the pavilion area much of the day, one volunteer estimated that there were as many as 400 or more in attendance.

Kirby was quite pleased with this year's event.

"I would say we had a really good turnout," Kirby said.
