Central City Police Using New Technology to Enhance Service

body-cameraBody CameraCENTRAL CITY, Ky. (8/14/14) — Central City Police officers are now using body cameras to assist them in their day-to-day policing duties.

Central City Police Chief Brent Roberson said he has been looking into this technology for quite a while.

The new cameras cost about $399 per unit as compared to several thousand dollars for a dash cam that fits into a police car. The cameras have about nine and a half hours of charge per use and have a very high quality of video and sound. They clip right onto an officers uniform and are so light weight that one barely notices they are there. The cameras are made by TASER, which is the same company that markets the device of the same name.

Police-Chief-Brent-RobersoPolice Chief Brent Roberson"We have had these devices for four days," said Roberson. "We had a complaint about an officer being rude. We asked the officer if he had his camera on, he did, so we reviewed the tape. We found the officer had acted in a professional manner."

Roberson says that the police department does not get a lot of complaints from the public, but, now, when they do, they can go back and review what happened.

The devices are so new, the department is in the process of writing up policies and procedures as to when to use the cameras. For instance, the cameras will not be used when delivering death notices to families.

Roberson believes the cameras will be good both for the police officers and the public.

Technology is changing the way law enforcement does their job, said Robertson.
