053MUHLENBERG COUNTY, Ky. (8/22/14) — The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is in the final stages of installation of a new pre-fabricated culvert along Kentucky 601 in Muhlenberg County.

Kentucky 601 has been closed at mile point 3.43 since work on the extended project started August 13. Kentucky 601 is expected to reopen to traffic late Monday.

The existing arch culvert under Kentucky 601 at the site partially collapsed after flash flooding, forcing the roadway to close for several days in Mid-April.. Transportation Cabinet crews were able to make temporary repairs to allow Kentucky 601 to reopen until a new culvert could be designed and fabricated.

By using a pre-fabricated structure, the KYTC Muhlenberg Highway Maintenance Crew has been able to replace the drainage structure along Kentucky 601 between Wright Lane and Cypress Cemetery Lane in a matter of weeks instead of having to close the roadway for a couple of months.

The new culvert is 9 ft. tall and 15 ft. wide by 70 ft. long and cost about $35,000 to fabricate and deliver. The use of state highway personnel for the installation helps to reduce the price tag to taxpayers.

The culvert runs under Kentucky 601 about 2/10ths of a mile north of the Western Kentucky Parkway Overpass.

If all goes as planned, installation of the new drainage structure should be completed late Monday, allowing the roadway to reopen to normal traffic flow. Motorists are asked to use caution once the roadway reopens as some finish work may continue at the site for a few days.
