Joe Hudson, Executive Director of the National Thumbpickers event, has announced that one of the featured artists for this year's weekend will be Doyle Dykes. From 'Wabash Cannonball' to 'Firebird', Dykes can play just about any type of music and make it his own. This Florida-born guitarist has gained a huge following over the years, including the late Chet Atkins, who was one of the early inductees into the Thumbpickers Hall of Fame.

Atkins is quoted in Vintage Guitar magazine as being asked who he would actually pay to see perform. Atkins' reply was "I would pay to see people like Doyle Dykes. He is an amazing finger picker. I sincerely admire him as a person and as a picker."

That's high praise from the man many believe was the greatest picker ever.

Dykes began his career touring and recording with The Stamps and Grand Pa Jones. He went on to share the stage with Atkins, Steve Wariner, 50s rocker Duane Eddy, John Forgerty, Peter Frampton and Les Paul. Dykes has appeared solo on the Grand Ole Opry stage numerous times.

From basic bluegrass albums to tributes to the Beatles, Dykes has had a busy life, recording a wide range of genres, and touring heavily, gaining fans across the world. Following his performance in Powderly, Dykes is headed to concert dates in Europe.

Dykes will perform in the home county of one of his greatest influences, Merle Travis, for the event, held annually at the Merle Travis Music Center.

The weekend activities are Sept. 26 through Sept. 28. Dykes is set to perform at the grand finale evening concert on Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. According to Joe Hudson, executive director of the event, other performers for the finale will include Pat Kirtley, John Knowles and Scott Taylor.
