Nationally Famed Quilt Instructor Relocates to Paducah

ephemera paducah 300PADUCAH, Ky. (5/29/13) – Nationally-renown quilt instructor Rose Hughes will teach “Adventures in Color” at Ephemera Paducah on June 8.

“I found quilting while I was in the corporate life in the ‘90s,” Hughes said. “I saw a quilt in a booth at the Folk Life Festival in Seattle and fell in love with it. Before long I had a primer on all quilts and was on my way.”

Hughes, who moved to Paducah from southern California in October 2012, has been juried into important quilt shows worldwide. Her work has appeared at festival, in galleries and in museums. It’s also been published in books, on CDs and as patterns. She’s contributed to Quilting Arts, Quilters Newsletter, Quilters Home, American Quilter, Quilts Japan, and Generation Q magazines, and has appeared on the television programs Simply Quilts, The Quilt Show, and Quilt out Loud.

Hughes and her husband, David, moved to Paducah to be in a more central location since she speaks and teaches all across the country. Also, she already knew some Paducahans from her online presence. She loved the fact that Paducah had a large fiber community and a strong arts base.

“Quilters and fiber people are the best. I found art quilting was where I needed to be. My journey really started when I started putting curves in.”

She developed a technique called “fast-piece applique” that she trademarked. She explores that technique among others in the three books she’s written, Dream Landscape, Exploring Embellishments and Design, Create, Quilt.

“I love using my Fast-Piece Appliqué method to transform curved shapes of colorful fabrics, and building my quilt tops layer by layer,” she said. “I sprinkle these quilt tops of custom fabrics, rich silks, hand-painted and commercial cottons with texture and add shiny magic with yarns, beads, and wool along with found and handmade embellishments. For me it is the transformation of the ordinary into the extraordinary that keeps me wanting more.”

The Ephemera Paducah workshop about color is designed for quilters and non-quilters, she said.

“In this no-sew class we¹ll explore color and how to use it in our art,” Hughes said. “Most people have to be shown how to be open to color. When I started I was very afraid of using color. In the class we'll look around at color in nature, in the media, in our neighborhood, at work and at home by referencing magazines, photos, posters, brochures and whatever else tempts our imaginations and tickles our senses. It’s not just a theory class – although we’ll touch on theory as a stepping-off point for experiencing it.”

The class will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Ephemera Paducah, 333 N. 9th St. The cost is $65. To register, go to www.EphemeraPaducah.com. The deadline for registration is June 7.

“Rose is a great instructor,” Kristin Williams, owner of Ephemera, said. “Anyone who wants to improve their ability to utilize color will benefit from this class. Whether you apply it to gardening, setting a beautiful table or to constructing a collage, you will learn valuable insights and be challenged to use color with flare and confidence.”

Ephemera Paducah offers a working studio area and retail space featuring a broad variety of art products. Williams said she is booking nationally-known instructors and local talent to teach workshops and classes year-round. To stay informed about upcoming classes and workshops, sign up via the website.
