Madisonville Council Gives Permission for Group to Raise Funds for Exercise Stations on Walking Trail

Madisonville Seal 01 300MADISONVILLE, Ky. (11/5/13) – The Madisonville City Council gave the go ahead for a local community leadership group to add exercise stations to the Dr. Festus Claybon Park.

“We were awarded the northwestern portion of the city,” said Chris Luttrell, spokesperson for the Leadership Hopkins County committee. “We know that there will be a spray park there, but we wanted to go out there and see if there was anything else that may need improvements and one of the things we noticed was the blacktop walking trail. We came up with the idea of creating a fit trail.”

The community group is looking to add seven to 25 exercise stations to the half-mile walking trail. The concept of this trail would be very similar to the Wellness Park near Baptist Health. The members are currently seeking donations and grant funds to pay for the project, which will determine how many stations they will be able to have.

“The cost is going to vary,” said Luttrell. “You can go the cheap route with wood structures or go up to a more expensive route with pre-made steel structures.”

The projected date to start the project is around April, which will give the group time to collect money and decide what structure to go with.

Luttrell also said the group believes it was important to make the fitness areas to be as maintenance free as possible.

The City Council advised the group to work with Chris Taylor, city parks superintendent on this project.

In other business, Mayor David Jackson appointed Allen Davis to the Hopkins County –Madisonville Public Library Board. His term expires on June 30, 2015.

The Hopkins County Joint Planning Commission recommended a change in the zoning classification of a portion of 376 Nebo Road from low density residential to general commercial that was approved by the city.

Corey Alexander, city finance director reported that they were able to collect $7,451 payments last month, which represents 77 percent of the total tax bill.

The council also approved Fire Chief Steve Stoltz to declare several of the self-contained breathing apparatuses and a 1991 fire engine as surplus. They also approved the bid to furnish and install steel casings under the CSX and P&L railroad tracks at the site of the planned Hopkins County Regional Sports Complex at a cost of $35,910.
