Daviess County School District Hosts ‘Camp Curiosity’

(6/14/13) – The Daviess County Public Schools district is hosting “Camp Curiosity,” an exciting summer education opportunity for migrant students in grades K-9 in our community. Migrant students are those who have significant interruptions in schooling due to frequent moving caused by agricultural related job opportunities for their guardians.
The third annual program provides migrant children the opportunity to enjoy a variety of experiences from soccer to kindermusik, and from math games to non-fiction reading scavenger hunts. New this year, Camp Curiosity will host the Kentucky Shakespeare Theatre for a weeklong acting immersion into the works of the playwright.

The camp has three goals: Help each student achieve reading fluency and non-fiction reading comprehension on grade level; help students achieve math computation fluency on grade level; and have fun!

Students work on hands-on activities in small groups to improve their reading fluency and math computation skills. Also new this year is an emphasis on non-fiction reading comprehension, a truly vital skill under the new Core Content State Standards for reading. In addition to a focus on math and reading, Camp Curiosity allows students to participate in visual arts and kindermusik classes as well as health education and media center (library and technology) classes. Intermediate students and middle school students will take a field trip to Lost River Cave, where students will enjoy a boat ride tour of the underground caverns, and to the National Corvette Museum, where students will learn about automobile manufacturing and see the newest Corvettes. Primary students will visit Trunnell’s Farm Market to get an up close look at running a farm, and the Owensboro Museum of Science and History. A family fun movie night will also be held near the end of camp.

Patrick Riley, administrator for the DCPS Migrant Summer Program, said, “Camp Curiosity is about engaging, educating and exciting the students to be their best throughout the year, and closing the summer academic gap to ensure immediate success on the first day of school.”

The camp is open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays from June 24 to July 19 at Southern Oaks Elementary School, 7525 U.S. 431. Also, three professional learning days for camp staff are scheduled June 19-21.
