Owensboro Fire Department Takes Park in International Safety and Health Week

obo fire 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (6/18/13) – The Owensboro Fire Department is taking part in the International Fire and EMS Safety and Health Week scheduled for June 16-22. The event, sponsored by the International Association of Fire Chiefs [www.iafc.org] and the National Volunteer Fire Council [www.nvfc.org], encourages fire departments to promote safety and health training and education during the week throughout all crew shifts.

“As part of this year’s efforts, the Owensboro Fire Department will focus on injury prevention, proper use of protective equipment, safety and risk assessment at structure fires, and the safety of the public at emergency incidents,” Fire Chief Steve Mitchell commented.

The number of line-of-duty deaths in the United States has declined in recent years, in part because of awareness and training programs like this one. However, according to data collected by the National Fire Protection Association, stress, exertion, and other medical-related issues, which usually result in heart attacks or other sudden cardiac events, continue to account for the largest number of fatalities.

Safety and Health Week is a collaborative program embraced by more than 20 national and international fire and emergency-service organizations, with sponsorship provided by the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) and the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC). The event is coordinated by the IAFC Safety, Health and Survival Section (SHS) and the NVFC's Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program.
