monica mcconnely 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (6/20/13) – Monica Connelly has been selected to serve as interim principal at Audubon Elementary School, replacing Caleb York, who has accepted a position as Title I coordinator for the Daviess County Public Schools district. The interim position is planned for the 2013-14 school year in anticipation of Robin Winnecke’s return to the Principal’s post in July 2014. Winnecke has been working as an Educational Recovery Leader, on loan to the Kentucky Department of Education through a memorandum of agreement.

Connelly brings 33 years of education experience to her role. She began her career as an English teacher at Daviess County High School in 1974 and served as technical assistant for teaching resources at the DCPS Central Office from 1991-94, working with the implementation of writing portfolios, state assessments and extended school services.

Connelly was named principal of Utica Elementary School in 1994 and served as principal at Deer Park Elementary School from 2002-07. Under her leadership, Deer Park led the state in accountability test scores, recording the highest accountability index of all elementary, middle and high schools in Kentucky.

Since retiring in 2007, she has continued to serve as an administrative substitute for the DCPS district.

Julie Clark, DCPS Assistant Superintendent for Teaching and Learning, said Connelly’s background will ensure a smooth transition. “Monica has demonstrated strong leadership in areas of academic achievement and fosters positive relationships with parents and teachers,” Clark said. “In addition, she has a true sense of the support needed to ensure success for all students.”

Connelly said her goals are to ensure Audubon continues the school’s tradition of service to students and families. She plans to work with teachers and staff to provide an effective learning environment for all students. “I truly enjoy working with teachers, staff and parents to create an atmosphere of learning and growth for children. I’m aexcited to be joining the outstanding staff of Audubon Elementary for the upcoming school year.”

Connelly will meet with Audubon Elementary School faculty and staff at a reception in the school media center at 3 p.m. July 8 and is looking forward to meeting parents and students in the coming weeks. A schedule of back-to-school events will be announced at a later date.
