Hartford Residents to See Sidewalk Renovations

grant money 300HARTFORD, Ky. (7/8/13) – Residents in Hartford will soon begin to see the city’s sidewalk system being revitalized, thanks to two grants the City of Hartford has received.

Hartford City Clerk Cheryl Morris told SurfKY News that two grants have been awarded, in a combined about of approximately $385,292.

The first grant, a TEA-21 (Transportation Equity Act) Grant, is a matching grant in the amount of $120,000, which the city of Hartford had to match in the amount of $30,000. Morris said on Monday that the city was allowed to match the funds in material and in time and labor. Also according to Morris, while some sidewalks will be renovated, most of the funds will be used to make the downtown sidewalks handicap accessible by providing handicap ramps at every available juncture.

The second grant was awarded to Hartford in conjunction with the National Safe Routes to School Program. According to the SRTS website, In July 2005, Congress passed federal legislation that established a National Safe Routes to School program to improve safety on walking and bicycling routes to school and to encourage children and families to travel between home and school using these modes. Safe Routes to School programs operate in all 50 states and D.C. Children benefiting from SRTS funds live in urban, rural and suburban communities representing varying income levels and a range of walking and bicycling conditions. With legislative extensions, the Federal Safe Routes to School Program has apportioned nearly $1.15 billion to states as of September 30, 2012. These funds have benefited or will benefit more than 14,000 schools.

The Safe Routes to School grant received by the city of Hartford was awarded in the amount of $235,292, and according to Morris, will focus on areas near and around Wayland Alexander Elementary School. This will include the Oakwood Drive and Union Street Areas.
