owensboro chamber blue 300OWENSBORO, Ky. (7/11/13) – “Owensboro’s housing market was relatively unscathed by the recession of 2008,” Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis Regional Executive Maria Hampton said as she spoke this morning with the Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce at its monthly Rooster Booster meeting.
 
Hampton, the guest speaker at the event, discussed the economic outlook of the Owensboro regional community and the also the US. She began by saying that an economist described Owensboro as the “bright spot of Kentucky and the Eighth District,” a view she later said was influencing studies elsewhere in Kentucky about revitalizing local economic growth. In fact, Hampton described the area’s financial agenda and the emerging trends in unemployment, government spending, and long-term finances as mostly positive when compared to trends in other parts of the state and nation.    
 
“Owensboro has weathered the recession much better than Kentucky and the US,” Hampton said, adding that the Owensboro area “didn’t fall as deep” economically as other areas and the area has also come out of financial burden faster than other regions due to the aggressive approaches used.
 
“Your efforts are reflected in the numbers,” she said.
 
The employment rate in the Owensboro area is steadily improving with 195,000 jobs currently with the unemployment rate coming down “sluggishly”, said Hampton.
 
Hampton was optimistic about the economic growth of the area and suggested that Owensboro “stay visionary.”
 
“It’s important to be nimble and forward thinking,” Hampton said.
 
Also during this morning’s meeting, Mayor Ron Payne told the crowd plans are in the works to hold an All-America City event as part of Friday After 5 tomorrow night. The fountain will be set to shoot water at least 60 feet into the air as part of the festivities.
 
The next Rooster Booster meeting will be held Aug. 1.
