Suspect Arrested In Crystal Meth, Heroin Investigation

drug arrest meth 03 300BEAVER DAM, Ky. (10/9/13) - The Ohio County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Louisville man yesterday at a rest area along the Western Kentucky Parkway following a month-long investigation into complaints of large amounts of crystal methamphetamine and heroin being brought into the county.

Police said the investigation began on the evening of Sept. 16, when the Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit was led to the Walmart parking lot in Beaver Dam, McDonalds later that night, and a strip mall parking lot in Owensboro on the night of Oct. 1.

On Tuesday, officers learned that Leon D. Mayes, 23, of the 2000 block of Peabody Lane in Louisville, was traveling to the Ohio County area on the afternoon of Oct. 8 with a large amount of crystal methamphetamine and heroin. The suspect’s vehicle pulled into the rest area located on the Western Kentucky Parkway in Beaver Dam at approximately 4 p.m. Mayes thought he was there to meet with a buyer for the drugs, and officers apprehended Mayes without incident.

Officers said they seized approximately eight pounds of crystal methamphetamine and over a pound of heroin during the arrest.

Mayes was charged with one count of First Degree Trafficking in a Controlled Substance, First Offense (Methamphetamine), one count of First Degree Trafficking in a Controlled Substance, First Offense (Heroin), and one count of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Authorities said Mayes was also wanted by Louisville Metro Police in reference to a warrant they had issued on charges of trafficking methamphetamine in their area.

Mayes was lodged in the Ohio County Detention Center.
