DCPS Among Top 100 Nationally for Finance Education

Daviess co high school bldgOWENSBORO, Ky. (4/22/14) — Daviess County High School has been recognized by the W!SE Financial Literacy Certification Program as one of the top 100 schools in the nation in this area of education, which is part of DCHS’s commitment to preparing students for success in life.

Renee Perkins, who teaches financial literacy courses at DCHS, said, “The W!SE Financial Literacy Certification Program invites high schools who teach a unit or course on personal finance to culminate their instruction with the Financial Literacy Certification Test. The test evaluates students’ knowledge of budgeting, money, interest, credit, banking, insurance, investing, regulatory agencies, housing and retirement planning. Students who pass the Certification Test become Certified Financially Literate. The program, in its 10th year, has reached more than 175,000 students in 34 states across the nation. In recognition of the program’s success, W!SE was awarded the coveted U.S. Treasury John H. Sherman Award for Excellence in Financial Education.”

Perkins believes strongly in the benefits of financial literacy instruction for high school students. “My goal is to prepare students to make smart financial decisions and take responsibility for their personal economic well-being,” she said. “The sensible financial decisions students make today will allow them to build wealth throughout their lifetime. In addition to the topics covered on the Financial Literacy Certification Test, our DCHS classes also emphasize learning to mange credit by paying bills on time and in full, and striving to be debt-free.”

DCHS was among schools recognized during a ceremony hosted by the New York Stock Exchange in New York City April 7.

The national ranking is the first of its kind in the United States and is designed to showcase schools of excellence that are teaching personal finance and measuring student knowledge.
