Mathies Named AP Second-Team All-America

KY WOMEN BASKETBALL 300LEXINGTON, Ky. (4/3/13) – University of Kentucky women’s basketball senior standout A’dia Mathies was named to the Associated Press All-America second team, it was announced on Tuesday. It marks the second consecutive year Mathies has been selected as an AP All-American.

Mathies once again led Kentucky to one of the most successful seasons in program history as the seventh-ranked Wildcats won a school-record 30 games, including a program-record tying 13 Southeastern Conference contests. UK, which ranked in the top 10 of both national polls all season, made its second straight Elite Eight appearance and third in the last four years with wins over Navy, No. 18/15 Dayton and 15/16 Delaware.

The Louisville, Ky., native led UK in scoring (16.1 points per game), 3-point field goals made (73) and 3-point field goal percentage (.425). She also ranked second on the team in steals (69) and assists (80) and third in rebounds (4.5 rebounds per game).

The 5-foot-9 guard finished her career ranked in the top 10 of 13 career lists, including first in steals (320), games played (140) and games started (139). She is second in scoring with 2,014 points, joining Wildcat greats Dan Issel (2,138, 1967-70), Kenny Walker (2,080, 1982-86), Jack Givens (2,038, 1974-78) and Valerie Still (2,763, 1979-83) as the only players in school history to reach 2,000 or more career points. She also ranks second in 3-point field goals made (177) and field goals attempted (1,687), third in field goals made (712), free throws made (413) and attempted (590), and ninth in assists (349).

Mathies’ other accolades include being named the SEC Player of the Year by the AP and co-player of the year by the league coaches. She was also named to the All-SEC first team (coaches and AP) and the SEC All-Tournament team, and is a finalist for the State Farm Wade Trophy, the Naismith Award, the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award and the John R. Wooden Award.

This marks the fourth consecutive season a Wildcat has been named to the AP All-America team. Victoria Dunlap was third team in 2010 and 2011, while Mathies was a third-team selection in 2012.

Mathies and the Wildcats saw their season come to an end Monday after falling in the regional finals to top-seeded Connecticut. Kentucky will return 11 of its 13 players next season, including four of five starters. The Wildcats also add three newcomers in Makayla Epps (Lebanon, Ky.), Linnae Harper (Chicago) and Kyvin Goodin-Rogers (Lebanon, Ky.).
